The cover letter successfully demonstrates that the person applying for the job has some of the skills that are necessary for employment. However, the letter is not specific enough to the company that they are applying to. While there is some information specific to the company, it is not enough to be fully encompassing. It also does not do a very good job at expanding on what is in the resume. More information would be helpful. The query letter is not very well-written. It is not tailored to the company that it is being sent to. It does give a sample, which is useful. It also tries to be witty, which is not supposed to happen in a query letter. The author of the letter talks about getting pregnant by a poet, and this is not necessary information. There are also some errors, such as the dashes needed in “up-and-coming.”

If you were the recipient of the cover letter, would you request an interview with the applicant?

It is difficult to say whether I would give an interview to the applicant who wrote the cover letter. It would really depend on the other applicants, and whether they were highly qualified. The letter is pretty basic, and for a creative company, I would not take much of an interest in the applicant because of their lack of creativity. This cover letter would be better for a position relating to business.

If you received the query, would you request additional pages from the novelist?

If there were not many people sending me queries, I would likely read the first few sentences, at least, of the story before making a decision. However, with so many people likely sending me query letters, I wouldn’t take much interest in what the literature said, due to the fact that the query letter was so poorly written, and the person didn’t seem intelligent, based on the irrelevant information that was included in the query.

What resources have you found most useful in conducting research for the report?

I found the myacademyart.edu website to be most useful in conducting the research. This site provided me with a list of the top industry websites. Being able to access these websites and learn more about each of these companies covered a lot of groundwork in my research and allowed me to better grasp what each of these companies had to offer for my project.

What have you learned about yourself or your work as a result of your work on the report?

I have learned that I actually enjoy doing research. While I knew before that research can be fun, I think now I realize that it is only actually fun when there are the right resources available for conducting my research. Sometimes when researching a topic, it can be difficult to find the information that you need. Knowing the sources to go to, such as myacademyart.edu can provide with quick access to the most important information that is needed. I have also found that using additions to Google search queries, such as “edu” or “gov,” can provide a lot of valuable information about the topic, and this comes from credible sources, rather than from blogs or Wikipedia, for example.

Have any questions proven difficult to answer? If so, which ones?

Some of the information that deals some of the details of each company have been difficult to answer. However, if I do enough research on each company website, they usually contain all the information that I need.

The Serpent Mound dates from 400 to 1100 CE and is the largest and most famous effigy mound. The Serpent Mound consists of three parts, which extend to over 1,330 feet. It varies in height from just a few feet to over 100 feet tall. The Serpent Mount rests on the landscape with its head facing or encapsulating a second object approaching a cliff above a stream. The Serpent was constructed to honor the cosmic rhythms. It accomplishes this through its form and structure that winds back and forth before the tail ends in a coil. The Serpent’s head is aligned with the summer solstice sunset, and each of the three humplike coils of the serpent’s body appear to be aligned respectively to the summer solstice sunrise, the Equinox sunrise, and the winter solstice sunrise. This proclaims the understanding and admiration for the celestial realm. This effigy does not contain any human remains, unlike others. It was not constructed for burial purposes; rather, it was site of ceremonial rituals relating to cosmological beliefs.

The Pyramid of the Sun, which is 63 meters (206 feet) tall and 215 meters (705 feet) square, is the largest of the Teotihuacán structures. Teotihuacán was a deeply religious civilization. The Pyramid of the Sun was considered a space reserved for ceremonial rituals. Only the elite had the privilege view of the universe from this massive structure. With each step, the climbers ascended closer to the heavens, creating the illusion of reaching the stars, the moon, and the sun. The Pyramid of the Sun has a more important function than just a representation of Teotihuacan’s connection to the spirit world and the material world. Pyramid of the Sun is a reflection between manmade structures and nature.

Most of the earthworks discussed in Module Two are ephemeral in nature, meaning they are transitory and will one day cease to exist. What is your opinion of ephemeral art? Do you agree that art should have a life cycle or aim to last forever? What are some of the pros and cons of this type of artwork?

As an artist, I would like for my artwork to remain as long as possible. However, nothing can escape time and decay. I disagree that art should have a life cycle. I believe that a project should be done so well that for many years, even hundreds of years, it will not have changed. On the other hand, I understand the deeper meaning of ephemeral art. When the viewer sees the artwork decaying with nature, there is more of an appreciation for art itself and the hard work. Some benefits to ephemeral art are: it is ecofriendly, never replicated, and makes an imprint in the memory of the viewer, as it will never be seen again. On the down side, it is short-lived.

THE THREE SISTERS

Chekhov’s play, The Three Sistersis about the Russian privileged class, which was going through a time of upheaval.

The play is set during a time that Russia was looking for meaning in the world. During the play, the three sisters – Olga, Masha and Irina – represent this upper class of Russians, and are considered cultured and refined women. They are in their 20s. They were raised in urban Moscow and have made their home in a small town for 11 years. Their father is now dead and their expected return home to Moscow becomes a symbol of a good life for the young women. But the redundancy of their everyday lives starts taking a toll. In this essay, I will discuss a comment made in 1978 by a reviewer from The Guardian, who said Three Sisters is about “the sense of people trapped in place and time, desperate with large hopes which will never be realized.” The play depicts a strong characterization of what can happen to naïve, privileged young people when the harsh realities of life take hold.

Each of the sisters hates her life in the small town of the province in Russia. They had been raised in Moscow, where they lived in the glitz and glamour of a privileged lifestyle. And, like so many privileged young people who stray away from home in their youth, these women suffered because of the lack of the various luxuries they were used to. They were certainly out of their element outside of Moscow, and as they struggled to find their place in the small town, they could only dig themselves deeper into despair.
The play reveals a sense of gloom, and this is a communication of the three sisters being stuck in place and time. The young women want to return to the former lifestyle they had, but it is exceedingly difficult due to their monetary position. There are several aspects to the gloom that is represented in the play. The largest impact on the feel is the time in which the play is set. The early 1900s is an age that is relatively dull. Furthermore, the time period in Russia is also dull and as the country faced with the challenge of finding its identity. This is also a struggle that the three sisters are facing, not only because of their young age, but also because they are living a lifestyle away from the comfort of home. They are searching for an identity and they are a metaphor for their country and time period, (Deskin, par. 3).

The dialogue included in the play is also rather dull. There is no vibrant or witty language used, and this helps maintain the tone. Because of the fact that there is a lack of sharpness to the dialogue, there is nothing solid on which to characterize the play’s ensemble. Without crafty language, the characters aren’t presented in a light that would indicate they are intelligent, or not intelligent, for example. But what is communicated is the fact that the three sisters are crying out for hope for their future. The sisters are extremely preoccupied with the lives that they used to have. The oldest of the three sisters, Olga, comments on the fact that Irina is very young and beautiful, but she views her own life as a high school teacher not having the opportunity for her to enjoy her youth.  Another sister, Masha, seems to be relatively despondent, but then she later wakes up from her poor mood when guests come to visit. The guests are Russian military officers, as well as family and friends of the girls’ father, who was a general, but is now dead. Their father died the year prior, (Deskin, par 5).

The conversation that ensues is an indication of the lack of identity that is taking place throughout the play. For example, one of the officers, Baron Tuzenback, talks about the future. He talks about a cloud that is possessing the country. This cloud is a representation of what he calls the snobbery, laziness and prejudice against work. Those attitudes are a danger to the foundations that build the society. Another one of the officers, Vershmin, is cautious about the future of all people on the planet. “Several times in the play he philosophizes about an evolution of the human spirit to the point, say in two or three centuries, where man will be set free from the chains of suffering and will truly know what it means to be happy,” (Deskin, par. 4). These conversations are a representation of the conflicts that the three sisters are going through.
The sisters’ brother, Andrei, is considered too be the black sheep in the family and he is well aware of this. He has a college education, but he isn’t able to escape the mediocrity of the life that he is living. He is frustrated with his work life and romantic life. He is engaged to a woman named Natasha who is extremely selfish. She moves in with the family and this leads to her becoming the seam in the household. She never really seems to fit in, and this shows same kind of crisis that the girls are going through, with the world around them not fitting in with how they want to live their lives.

Meanwhile, the play takes on a different subplot, which strengthens the inconsistency theme that is throughout the play and in the girls’ lives – the Baron is trying to seduce Irina. He does this, but is not very successful at all. At the same time the officer Solyony is sitting idle. Vershim is trying to seduce Masha, who is actually married. Olga then needs to offer a consolation to her family, but she is struggling to maintain her mental health as she struggles to find her identity, and cope with the fact that she is living a life that she doesn’t want. More mental problems are evident in a neurotic doctor. All these characters must cope with living with each other, and this interaction reaches a boiling point during the play. That tension is similar to what the women feel about their lives.

The challenging part is that there isn’t a single character who can really identify with who they are. They all have desires, but they are unsuccessful at attaining any of those wishes. They don’t really explain their feelings to each other, and this is perhaps because they don’t really have a strong grasp on what those feelings actually are. The time that they are seemingly trapped in eventually manifests on the fact that they are actually travelling through time quite fast, and the girls’ lives are passing by them. And as this time passes, so too does the hope that change will actually come. This is a painful realization as the three sisters continue to struggle with their daily lives. There is little hope by the final act that the three sisters will have a new beginning. “Day becomes night; the light of hope and the promise of a new beginning ebbs away and reappears only for the final act, just in time for the characters to come to their senses about their relationships and take measures to remedy them with calculating precision, unable to recover emotions that have long since been lost,” (Deskin, par. 9).

The sisters are desperately seeking some kind of renewal of their lives, and this renewal’s source is from outside of their daily routine. However, they continue to find themselves in the same small town. In this town there are always the same people and the same lack of opportunities for them. They continue to want to move back to Moscow, but that dream never becomes a reality to them. The town, and the lifestyle that comes along with it, is like an anchor to the girls, and it is holding them down, preventing them from living the life that they truly want to live. There is the feeling in the play that none of the characters will ever find themselves or achieve what they desire. Olga, who is perhaps the most intelligent of the three sisters, makes the remark that there is nothing else that you can do in life other than keeping on living. This reveals that the character has lost all hope for a life that she once had, one that is in Moscow and full of the types of luxuries that the three sisters once enjoyed. Their eventual complacency with the life that they are living replaces their hate towards it. They have learned to accept that they are now living lives they don’t want to live, but they have to accept their misery and carry on.

However, one could take a different interpretation of Olga’s words, which come near the end of the play. She seems to be slightly optimistic about the future, despite having failed for so long to achieve her goal of returning to Moscow.

“The bands are playing so gaily, so bravely, and one does so want to live! Oh, my
God! Time will pass on, and we shall depart for ever, we shall be forgotten; they
will forget our faces, voices, and even how many there were of us, but our sufferings
will turn into joy for those who will live after us, happiness and peace will reign on
earth, and people will remember with kindly words, and bless those who are
living now,” (Chekhov, p. 62).

So even though she doesn’t think there will be a lot of happiness for her and her two sisters, she is still hoping that some good will come out of their suffering. She believes that the world has better days ahead, but that happiness is not within the lifetime of the three sisters. But the suffering that the sisters are undergoing is with a reason, Olga points out. She mentions several times, “If only we could know, if only we could know!,” (Chekhov, p. 63).

The girls certainly seem powerless to control the circumstances that they are in. And that theme of not being able to control one’s own destiny is a key theme, not only for the sisters, but for the other characters as well, and for Russia as a nation. Some might say that even the entire world is subject to not being controllable. Everyone’s lives, the story would have the reader believe, is miserable, and it is as though the task of living is a test by God. The almighty force can’t be tampered with, as everyone is powerless. This is what the girls come to think, is that they aren’t in control of their lives and they are instead made to suffer in the small town. However, the sisters don’t really make a good enough effort to find their way back to Moscow. They are fully capable of working hard and saving money to travel back to Moscow. However, it is very difficult for the girls because they were used to having help from their parents, but that is no longer possible because their father is now dead.

However, near the beginning of the play, Irina seems more optimistic about the sisters’ futures. “The life of us three hasn’t been beautiful yet; it has been stifling us as if it was weeds… ,” (p. 17). The young women are clearly suffering throughout the play, but they come to learn that they are trapped in a way that they can’t create their future. They feel like they deserve to have a future that is similar to what their past was in Moscow, but they lack the life skills that could help them move into the right direction.

The sisters have been sheltered for so long, and now they are forced to survive. The women could eventually learn what it takes to get their lives onto the track where they are able to get their former life back. While they seem to be trapped in the past, they need to live in the present, and develop the skills that will make them more capable of living the type of life that they used to have. This theme of being trapped in place and time is a burden to their lives. The women are ill-equipped to handle the challenges that are posed to them. However, they will eventually grow wiser and they may be able to find a way to achieve the type of life that they wish they had, though that isn’t communicated in the play.

Answer:

As a designer, my first art purpose is to give form to feelings and I incorporate this into my interiors. Second, I accommodate people in their spaces. It is my job to create a comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing area while keeping in mind my client’s needs when adding my artistic touch.

In my previous class I was to design a living area for my final project, consisting of several guidelines of a modern downtown apartment. I chose few shades of colours to represent calmness, the beauty of the view, the ocean and the modern Vancouver downtown vibe. By using light shades of creams, browns, whites and purl accents with ultra-modern lighting, I was able to accomplish the theme of luxury.

Maya Lin’s Vietnam War Memorial portrays the image of an honourable loss to the viewers and mourners. Maya Lin described her work as “an interface, between our world and the quieter, darker; more peaceful world beyond.” Her non-representational style made her design politically correct from the view of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund because it did not glorify or condemn the war. The massive size of the V-shaped cut into the Earth, and shiny granite walls full of names of the deceased or lost engraved on them, makes the viewer think about how they feel about war, violence, life and death. Symbolically, the monuments can be compared to a healing cut. As time goes by, the cut heals, leaving a scar to remember the time of suffering.

Frederick Hart’s Three Soldiers portrays the image of unity. A racially mixed group of young men wear contemporary uniforms of the period and carry war equipment. The realism of the soldiers is to reflect the significance of the war and the effect on history. The artist’s representational style settled the protests after the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund decided to commission for a traditional monument. Being politically correct, the Three Soldiers are placed close to the Vietnam War Memorial and face the granite walls.

IMPLEMENTING CHANGE

Many managers face the challenges making changes to technology in the workplace. Sometimes they have the assistance of team members to decide the best way to implement the change, but sometimes managers are confronted with the task of making the switch on their own. This is often where a manager can thrive, or in some cases, where they can crumble. While some changes can be as simple as using email to confirm decisions made among staff and with other stakeholders, others are extremely challenging and deal with an array of possibilities to which the outcome is difficult to know. These decisions often require action by the employees. When technology is involved, this can become somewhat of a challenge, depending on the type of office in which the business operates. For example, an IT company shouldn’t have much of a problem implementing technological change, while a real estate brokerage might be confronted with confused employees. In this literary review, I will lay out some of the ways certain articles suggest ensuring employees carry out the technology change.

According to “Strategic Planning Facilitator Guide,” several techniques – when only one person is responsible for making the decision – can often be ignored by employees. They may not want to commit the time or energy to tackling a problem. Attempting to make the change  is also risky because it could lead to failure. For a manager, not being able to fix the issue can damage their reputation. Many managers believe that ignoring the problem will cause it to go away, but this is rarely the case, (Muller, N.D.). This is an accurate outlay of the issue; however, I would go a step further by emphasising that change isn’t often easy to implement. Employees are sometimes unwilling to co-operate because of personal barriers, organizational barriers and lack of readiness. It is up to management to overcome the resistance and guide employees to accept. Many employees are afraid of the unknown and are unwilling to stop their habits. Many may not agree that change is needed.

The article goes on to say that a training module can be executed in 10 steps: defining goals, defining the scope of products and services, assessing Internet resources, assessing the external environment, analyzing Internet arrangements, assessing competitive advantage, developing a competitive strategy, communicating the module to stakeholders, implementing the strategy and evaluating the outcome, (Muller, N.D.). This makes sense, and the essay does well at explaining that, but what I found to be most interesting was what it had to say next:

Identifying and diagnosing the problem with the employees’ reluctance can only be accomplished by telling the employees that a problem exists and needs to be assessed and fixed. To help the employees understand that a problem is present, a manager must have a goal ready from which to compare the current state of affairs: they must see the way things are and understand the way they ought to be. The manager can compare current performance to past performance of each employee and match the company’s overall productivity to the productivity comparable companies. It should be noted that the majority of technology changes are made to increase productivity. The anticipated future performance is another area where a manager can encourage an employee to make an effort at learning new technology, (Muller, N.D.).
I think it should be added here that after reviewing the training module with the employee and working closely with them will help them understand how to make the switch. Setting out milestones will work to achieve that. Here’s what “Planning and Goal Setting for Small Business,” form the U.S. Small Business Administration, had to say: The manager will need to evaluate their performance. This involves the collection of information about the decision’s success. Goals, such as a 10 per cent increase in productivity, or a 100 per cent of deliveries on time, for example, are effective at evaluating whether an employee has the willingness to learn the new technology and whether the adapting is at the pace the company needs. Data can then be gathered to analyze where the training module is meeting the goals and where it falls short. If the employee isn’t meeting the milestones, then the manager should return to the drawing board to try a new course of action, (Planning, 2010).

While it can be difficult to convince employees to make the change, a more inclusive environment could help employees’ willingness. For example, in “Guidelines for Planning and Conducting Workshops and Seminars,” it says various alternative technologies can be set out and voted on. Another option is to set one or two people in the group as the decision-makers. However, the issue with designating certain people in the group with the authority to decide which decision is better leaves people out and may keep otherwise helpful voices silent. It should be noted that a workshop such as this would be helpful while creating the training module, (Guidelines, 2010).

The guide goes on to say workshops are an effective way for a group to come to a decision. A workshop will combine each member’s skills and training into a group setting. The participation of staff also increases the sense of each team member’s involvement and worth to the company. It also helps educate and develop each person involved through idea sharing. A workshop or series of workshops can focus each team member’s skills and interests. These skills should overlap with the goals and values of the company, (Guidelines, 2010).

The guide is quite clear, but I think this could be added: While the workshops are clearly a way to combine the ideas of multiple people, it also presents an opportunity in the work environment to break down barriers (particularly if there was company merger), integrate staff and improve overall communications. The workshops are also an opportunity for those who are less experienced in the company to learn from those who have been in the business for a while.

Each member of the team should be made comfortable so they will freely speak about the technology change and to communicate their ideas about what course of action they think the company should take.

Once a training module is created, another workshop could be held in which the team can be addressed by a facilitator, which will encourage the overall participation of the group, rather than have them trained by a single person, which can be quite detached for each person of the group. This can hinder their willingness and confidence to adopt to the technology.

Technology is always a welcomed addition to a workshop room. Presentations made on software such as PowerPoint can be extremely simple to create and they communicate a clear message about items such as the company’s goals, previous actions, values and any charts and graphs necessary to communicate a team member’s line of thought. This can improve employee retention.

After reading “Guidelines for Planning and Conducting Workshops and Seminars,” it convinced me that conducting workshops would actually likely get people to participate more in the change, particularly if their ideas were adopted. I think the article could have talked a bit about how the workshop’s ability at facilitating an overall understanding of the need for the technology change would encourage people to participate more in the change, rather than just hearing that out-of-the blue that they will have to make the change.

It was interesting when “Guidelines for Planning and Conducting Workshops and Seminars,” noted that the technique chosen by a company to come to implement a change will be different on a case-by-case basis, but clearly laying out a company’s goals is fundamental to the process. Without having a clear vision about where a company wants to be in the future, management isn’t able to make a decision that will be consistent with the company’s identity. Whether an individual or team approach is taken, a company should utilize the information that is already available to them, and determine how to acquire the knowledge needed if a company approaches unfamiliar territory, (Guidelines, 2010).

I found many of the guides and essays reviewed lacked one fundamental component. And that is a general way to implement change effectively by creating an ethical culture. It should be made clear from the start what the expectations are from each individual in the company. These could include setting out the company’s goals and core organizational values, which could include a willingness to take risk, placing value on people and including all employees in developing ideas, for example.

I believe the pieces were also lacking information about effectively implementing change by having managers demonstrate their commitment to follow the standards set out. A reduction needs to be made in the rewards for unethical behavior. For example, a car salesman that sells a lemon for profit shouldn’t be encouraged.

There was one piece that did mention ethics: In “Developing caBIG Training Modules: A How-To Guide,” the agency explains that a comprehensive training module is the groundwork for a business to move forward with the company’s goals. It must convey the problem-solving fundamentals of the in a clear and concise manner. Consideration for all that is affected doesn’t only line a company with conducting business legally, it also improves public relations and makes the consumer happy to buy the business’s product. This is a particular concern today, when people are becoming progressively concerned with the Earth’s sustainability. Throughout the process, the workshop should have a defined purpose, while presenting the overall goal of the project. Summarizing the audience analysis is also important and proposing a training setting, outlining required resources for training and listing the leaders involved is vital (Developing, 2006).
In a perfect society, the good of a person could be trusted and that employee could be given free rein to make their own decision. But this isn’t always possible. Many people require ethical guidance to help them make their decisions. Therefore, the module should outline what is expected of each employee. And this should allow some freedom to the employee to come to their own decision, but while taking into consideration the company’s framework. For example, a newspaper might outline in the strategic plan to not have a conflict of interest with the sales and editorial side of the operation. A newspaper sales agent might consider selling advertisement on the basis that an article is written about said company. This would go against the moral guidelines of many companies that want the editorial department to be unbiased.
On occasion, the training module can go against the good of the company, if it is to be replaced by the good of society as a whole, in my opinion. The immediate result, as well as the result which most clearly considers the future of the affected stakeholders should be factored in. When faced with a difficult situation where a manager can’t decide what action to choose to get employees responding to technology change, they should consult all stakeholders to come to an agreement about the strategy to take – and after reading the articles, I believe the best way is by conducting a workshop.

My brother and I also own a transportation company in my home, where we commute thousands of pilgrims each year from the airport in Jeddah to the holy mosque in Mecca. We have operated that business since 2007. However, I left Saudi Arabia so I could make an attempt at the tourism business in Canada. I expect to graduate from this program in 2016, so I have two years remaining before I can make my entry.

I am currently attempting to accumulate the skills necessary for me to be a successful business owner in British Columbia. While I am from Nova Scotia, I’d like to move o B.C. to start up my business. I believe there is a lot of potential in tourism in B.C., and there is some room for additional entrepreneurs to gain entry into this growing market. “… the emerging trends in technology, the opportunities of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler, and the successful completion of negotiations for Approved Destination Status with China have all brought exciting opportunities to the British Columbia tourism industry” (The Value, 2012).

However, before I am able to make a dent in the industry, I need to accumulate the skills in school that will equip me to gain entry into the B.C. tourism market. I believe it will be best if I complete various courses related to the tourism business prior to graduating. Once I have graduated, I would like to secure a position as an Accommodation Service Manage/Rooms Division Manager. This will help me to gain a better grasp of the tourism market in B.C., and help me establish some of the skills that will ensure my long-term success in the tourism business there. While I may know a lot about tourism in Saudi Arabia, it is important for me to not assume many components are the same. I have a lot to learn in the next two years, and I believe this will ensure my future success.

Right now, I am doing whatever I can to stay up-to-speed with current events in B.C. The various trends that are going on in the province will dictate whether there is a significant need for increasing the amount of tourism-related businesses that are operating in the province. For example, a considerable number of people visit Vancouver, B.C. I find the news that is coming out of that city to be interesting, because it can provide me with some insight as to whether people want to move there. The 2010 Winter Olympics has played a major role in tourism at the city. Also, the municipality was voted as the third most-livable city in the world last year, (Vancouver, 2013).

Where I plan to be Two Years After Graduation

Two years after graduating, I plan on living in Vancouver. I have visited this city in the past, and I have seen the type of beauty it possess. With the fact that the city is gaining such a good reputation over recent years, it makes sense that I would move there to be in the tourism business. While living there, I plan to work as an Accommodation Service Manager/Rooms Division Manager at a major hotel. Because I want to live in downtown Vancouver, I would like this hotel to be one of the fancier locations, such as the Westin Bayshore Hotel, or the Sutton Place Hotel. I remember visiting these locations when I was in Vancouver, and they were among the nicest hotels when I was there. The Bayshore Hotel is along the Coal Harbour, which is a beautiful part of Vancouver because of the amazing mountains along the North Shore, and because of the ocean.

I can picture myself living in Vancouver for a long period of time. While I do enjoy living in Nova Scotia, I feel that not only is there more opportunity in Vancouver to be successful in the tourism business, but there is also many more things to do there that I am interested in. For example, several options for skiing are available, and these hills are only a 20-minute drive from downtown Vancouver (Vancouver, 2011). Also, Whistler/Blackcomb is only 1.5 hours away, and these hills will provide me with ample opportunity to do some skiing. I also look to explore areas such as the Vancouver Art Gallery and Stanley Park, which has a large seawall, beaches and lakes (Vancouver, 2011). “More than 1,000 acres of forested area close to the downtown core, Stanley Park’s main attraction is the sea wall – a paved path that stretches 13.7 miles from the Vancouver Convention Centre, through Stanley Park and ends at Kitsilano Beach Park” (Vancouver, 2011).

The city offers a slew of activities in which I can participate, and these tie in closely with my career goals. By exploring the many activities that Vancouver and B.C. has to offer, I am better able to perform my task as the Accommodations Service Manager/Rooms Division Manager. I will be able to help my guests plan their activities accordingly, if the opportunity presents itself. In two years, I will be enjoying many of these attractions in the big city, and this will help me be effective in my position as the Accommodation Service Manager/Rooms Division Manager at one of the major hotels in downtown Vancouver.

Job, Location and Responsibilities

This job will take me a bit out of my comfort zone because it is on the opposite side of Canada from where I live now. However, I have already moved to Canada from Saudi Arabia, so I think I am able to quickly adjust to the change. In fact, I am the type of person who embraces change, and I will thrive in the responsibilities of my new job and location in Vancouver. The Accommodation Service Manager/Rooms Division Manager is responsible for planning, directing, organizing, evaluating, and controlling the various operations of the accommodations establishment, (Accommodation, 2013). In my case, this location will be an upscale hotel located in downtown Vancouver. However, the job could also be located at motels, bed and breakfasts, and resorts, for example, (Accommodation, 2013). My job would be to ensure there is a smooth operation of the business, and I will have to work with little direction.

In this position, it is important that I evaluate the various policies and procedures that the hotel is operating under. It is also important that I prepare budgets, and this is where my experience running my shuttle company in Saudi Arabia will come in handy. In fact, many of the same skills that I developed there will be useful in this new position. As one of the major skills that I already possess, the pricing and development of promotional strategies is an area where I am savvy. I recognize there are differences in the ways operations are carried out in Canada, but I feel that marketing psychology is relatively the same no matter where a person advertises. People are always looking for value, and if the hotel I am working at can give it to them, then they will likely be new guests.

The position also requires me to negotiate with clients for them to use facilities for conventions, receptions, banquets, and various other functions. However, only some hotels offer this. Out of the two examples given earlier – the Bayshore Hotel and the Sutton Place Hotel – only the Bayshore Hotel has a conference centre, (The Westin, 2013). I will also need to meet the guests’ needs for their meals and overnight stays. This is where my knowledge of the area will really come in handy.  I also need to supervise and recruit staff. Determining training needs and developing work schedules are also vital components of my job. Also, when customers complain, it will be up to me to ensure that they are receiving the attention they need. I will also reply to the inquiries and solve problems as they arise. Also, many of the administrative tasks are to be completed by me, as are the responsibilities to maintain the facility, supplies and equipment, (Accommodation, 2013).

In order to be hired for this position, there are several areas in relation to knowledge, skills and abilities that I need to have. Experience in tourism is a vital component, and it is a skill that I have a considerable amount of background in from my time in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, I need strong business management skills, sales and marketing skills, organizational skills, customer service skills, communication skills, leadership ability, first-aid training, human resources management, administration skills, and a diploma or degree in hospitality, business, hotel management or marketing, (Accommodation, 2013). Two years after graduation, I will possess all of these components. The only area I am concerned about is my communication skills, because English is a second language to me. However, I feel more and more confident each day with my language skills, and this is an area that I know will be perfect two years after graduation.

Expected Salary

I know that the salary will not be much at first, but this position is only a stepping stone for greater things in my future. According to Go2, which is an online information platform for the B.C. government, the salary ranges between $36,000 and $59,160 per year, (Accommodation, 2013). I believe that I will be in the lower end of that range because I will be only starting the job two years after graduation. I will likely need to start from the lower level position in the hotel and work my way to the top. However, I do not believe that I will only be earning $36,000. I believe that the fact I will be working my way up from within one of the top hotel locations in one of the most-sought-after spots in the world will help me to secure more money – perhaps in the high $30,000-range. Furthermore, my extensive experience in the industry will be a huge advantage to the company I eventually work for, and this can give me a solid bargaining position when I am negotiating the position. According to Go2, the wage that I would be earning does depend on the region in which I am employed. Due to the fact that Vancouver is the most expensive cities in North American to live (Vancouver Most, 2013), I think the pay will be higher there. Furthermore, I will likely be making a decent amount in gratuities, incentives and bonuses.

In the hit 1990s TV show “Home Improvement,” in the episode May the Best Man Win, Tim the Tool Man Taylor is a man who is obsessed with tools and building things. He hosts a fictional TV show called “Tool Time,” and is consistently getting himself into trouble due to his lack of attention to safety. In this essay, I will analyze how men are depicted in the show. The male “macho” attitude is featured prominantly in the show, and as the main character, Tim, tries to figure out how to function with a woman as the boss, he is continually made to appear unintelligent. 

The episode features Tim and his daily activities, which include acting very macho a lot of the time. Tim has hosted “Tool Time,” for the past three years and has been given credit for making the show a success. But when his former producer runs off with a magazine centrefold, a new producer steps in – the former producer’s daughter. This starts a dynamic that has Tim battling to keep his show in the style that he wants. The first confrontation that the new producer and Tim have is over how to renovate a home. Tim wants to feature the renovation of a basic patio as the main focus of an episode. However, the new producer wants to add “a few French doors for light,” thus creating a breakfast nook. Tim does not like the idea because it is not manly enough. He says “Are you crazy? This is ‘Tool Time.’ Men don’t eat in a nook.” This shows the stereotype that is placed on men, who, according to the show’s writers, do not consider a nook to be manly enough. This reveals the macho attitude that men are depicted as having, due to the fact that they would rather eat a more “manly” setting.

Tim’s intelligence is belittled in the episode when the confrontation with the new producer continues. When on the site where the crew is ready to shoot the episode, Tim arrives to see that the new producer has essentially taken over for him. She has the entire crew laughing at her jokes, and running her errands. When Tim arrives, he is upset, and continually tells her that it is his show. Tim is about to shoot a scene from a roof that the new producer tells him is too dangerous to stand on. However, Tim says that the show is for men, and men need danger to be entertained. This is another stereotype that is portrayed in the show, and is claims that men are dangerous and reckless. Tim then proceeds to climb the ladder and then stand on the roof. While shooting a scene, Tim walks around the roof before eventually falling through. This action claims that men can be arrogant to the point where they are unintelligent, and women actually have more intelligence than men. This is represented in the fact that the new producer had warned Tim about the potential of falling through the roof, but Tim ignored that advice.

The dynamic that is created between the new producer and Tim is also a stereotype that men cannot handle a woman being the boss. Tim gives off a “my-way-or-the-highway” kind of attitude when he is told that the new producer is the daughter of the former producer. He assumes that she does not know what she is talking about when he arrives on the set to shoot the scene from the roof. When she warns Tim that he should not stand on the roof, he essentially says, “What do you know?” She mentioned that she got a look at the foundation from inside the home, and determined that “the roof is unsafe.” However, Tim, as a stereotypical guy, does not think she knows what she is talking about. He then asks surprised when she details renovation terminology.

The shows depicts men in a very unflattering way. According to the writers, men are macho people who have little regard for safety, and they cannot have a woman as a boss on a renovation show because they do not know anything about “guy” interests. While there has been a considerable amount of emphasis over the years on stereotypes relating to women, the stereotypes about men have been largely overlooked. Feminism made great progress for the women’s rights movement, but the media sometimes goes too far, and it ignores the stereotypes that are placed on men. As the reader has seen, “Home Improvement” depicts men in an unflattering way, by labelling them as being macho and with little respect for women’s ideas.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which is one of the top vaccine manufacturers, was forced to pay $3 billion for bribing doctors, which allowed them to fake research. The $3 billion is intended to pay for the civil and criminal liability that arose from the unlawful promotion of prescription drugs. The company plead guilty to three counts of criminal information, which includes two counts for introducing misbranded drugs. The drugs included Paxil and Wllbutrin. They were distributed to interstate commerce. Also, there was one count for not reporting the safety data about a drug called Avandia to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The company was supposed to complete in its application to the FDA the intended use of the drug. After a drug is approved, the company should have limited the promotional materials of the drug to the approved uses as outlined by the FDA, which the company did not do. The product was misbranded because its promotion was not limited to the uses that were approved by the FDA. The company unlawfully promoted the drug Paxil for the treatment of depression in patients who were under 18 years old. The FDA, however, had not approved the drug’s use for pediatric use. The company sponsored dinner programs, lunch programs, spa programs, and various other activities that were designed to promote Paxil in adolescents and children. GSK paid for the speaker to talk to an audience that consisted of doctors, and they paid for the spa or meals for the doctors that attended. The company eventually admitted that labeling was false and mislead people in relation to using the drug in patients younger than 18.

With the Wellbutrin drug, the company was convicted of promoting the product for weight loss, but it was only approved for Major Depressive Disorder at the time. The firm also promoted the drug for sexual dysfunction, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and substance addictions. Furthermore, the firm paid millions of dollars to doctors so that they would speak at and attend meetings, and sometimes these would be at lavish resorts. The company also used sales representatives, supposedly independent Continuing Medical Education, and sham advisory boards to promote the product.

Who were the injured parties?

The injured parties in these cases were the people who used the drugs to attempt to treat their disorders. For example, people who had weight problems, ADHD, substance abuse problems, depression and sexual dysfunctions. Various other products promoted by the company were used for purposes that were falsely advertised. Adolescents were also included in the list of the company’s victims, and these included teenagers and children under 18 who were depressed. The drug actually resulted in an increased risk of suicide among the young demographic taking Paxil.

How has the unethical behavior affected the organization, the individual, and society?

The organization was forced to pay $3 billion, so the case made a financial dent in the company’s operations. The level of impact the $3-billion payment will have on the company was not disclosed, but considering the firm is worth many billions, it only makes a dent in the company’s operations, and the firm may have actually made a profit from the sale of the falsely labeled drugs. The CEO of the company, Andrew Witty, brushed aside the convictions, saying the criminal acts are from a different era of the company, and that the current management is not to blame for the harm that the company did to so many people. Society has been helped by the conviction because it is the largest health-care fraud settlement in United States history. This effort hopes to improve the integrity of pharmaceutical companies, which can have such a huge impact on the lives of everyone in America.

How could the unethical behavior be avoided or resolved?

This unethical behavior will likely be more avoided now that the Department of Justice is taking a more active role in ensuring that health-care fraud does not take place. This push is in response to a slew of unethical behavior from health care companies, and the large fines appear to be enough to deter these companies from continuing their unlawful behavior. In her essay, “Women’s Beauty: Put Down or Power Source?,” Susan Sontag discusses the various implications of beauty, specifically for women. She argues that women are significantly valued for their looks, rather than on their abilities. At the same time, men are valued for their abilities and other various mental competencies. This essay will explore the use of structure to present the way the author wrote her essay. Sontag structures her essay to provide a wide analysis of the evolution of beauty in society; in doing so, she facilitates the credible integration of her own ideas by alluding to historical and religious facts.

Ancient Greek society placed an enormous amount of credit on the value of appearances, and this is an example from which Sontag provides a clear analogy for her views on the value of women. Structuring the essay so that it starts with the most extreme example of the value put on beauty allows Sontag to clearly communicate the value that beauty held and continues to hold. “For the Greeks, beauty was a virtue: A kind of excellence. Persons then were assumed to be what we now have to call – lamely, enviously – whole persons” (1). She effectively compares the Greek concept with her idea of what people assume today: that it is actually surprising when a beautiful person is also talented, intelligent and good (2). While this is a fairly bold assertion, many people would likely agree that intelligence, talent, goodness and beauty is a rare combination. However, others could argue that intelligence, talent and goodness are also rare in ugly people. Despite this potential logical fallacy, Sontag is effective at communicating to the reader the extreme opinions about beauty, and how there is a significant contrast in the way beauty was once perceived in Greece, and how it is perceived in many areas of the modern world.

Sontag goes on to incorporate religion to explain the transformation that beauty had taken, but she later explains how many of the components of the original Greek definition of beauty have stuck with women. She says Christianity, along with its morals, redefined what it meant to be a valuable person. “By limiting excellence (virtus in Latin) to moral virtue only, Christianity set beauty adrift – as an alienated, arbitrary, superficial enchantment” (3). From the basis of religion, she says beauty has been tightly linked to women, but not to men, and the value that it possesses has created an over-emphasis on the value of beauty. In other words, women are valued too much for their looks and too little on other qualities. Beauty has become something essential to a woman’s character (5). The contrast between the importance of beauty on men and women has given beauty a mixed reputation. There is now an obligation for women to be beautiful (5). Sontag uses this opportunity to describe the challenges faced by women to be beautiful. Beauty, thus, becomes a form of “self-oppression” (6). Women analyze each part of their bodies and this analysis causes fret, angst, and scrutiny, all the while never being satisfied, even if some parts of them pass the test (6). Sontag is able to then effectively communicate her perspective about the role of men. “In men, good looks is a whole, something taken in at a glance. It does not need to be confirmed by giving measurement of different regions of the body, nobody encourages a man to dissect his appearance, feature by feature” (7). From one idea to the next, Sontag provides the type of structure that allows her to effectively transition from the concepts of religion, to the formation of the contemporary ideas about the importance of beauty in men and women.

Sontag uses an evidence-based formula on which she provides her own analysis of the role of men and women. This structure facilitates a credible tone to her own ideas about the role of beauty in the lives of men and women. Taken alone, without the contextualization, Sontag would not be nearly as credible. However, she uses the concepts of Greek society, and its attitude towards beauty, to draw a level-headed comparison with what beauty means in society now. She creates an effective transition between the two periods by providing Christianity as a link. While her views are potentially controversial, she has been so bold in identifying a major feature of contemporary western culture that is relatively taboo, and for that she should be commended. Without the effective structure, which receives a helping hand from credible comparisons in society and doctrine, Sontag facilitates the effective use of rhetoric to tackle an important societal issue.
