THE DIGITAL DIVIDE IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD

Given the fast developing nature and near ubiquity of the worldwide web, a bridge between the global digital divide is not only possible, but inevitable. Although current evidence points to the contrary as Spencer E. Ante (2014) points out in his article Global Digital Divide Worsens, World Economic Forum Report Says. However, when predicting the outcome of digitization as the nations of the world develop, it is important to consider the long term ramifications of technology over the course of a long period of time, possibly over a hundred or more years. Just as the industrial revolution allowed for a more globalized economy for the twentieth century and previously un-imagined advances in technology in the Western World, the advent of the digital revolution will ensure that the world will see an ease of communication between nations previously divided by social economic inequality. The actual question to ask is not if, but when. As broadband providers look to expand their customer base, they will soon look beyond the first world for potential consumers of their services. Some would argue that it already has. In his article, Internet Access in Third World Countries, Wade Shepard expressed surprise at the surprisingly fast internet speed he found in South America “…using the internet in thrid (sic) world countries is much like it was five years ago in the U.S.A. That is to say: not bad” (2009, para 2). It is clear that the worldwide web is available in economically disadvantaged countries, but the global digital divide will only be bridged when its poorest inhabitants have access to it. That may take some time, but given that the rate of technological advancement has sped up incrementally since the digital revolution, it will not take as much time as popular opinion would suggest.[Need an essay writing service?
