THEORIES OF ADAPTATION

Comparing a Scene from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen with Its Equivalent Adaptation from the Lizzie Bennet Diaries

‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen is a story about the five daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet who are not married as they interact with two gentlemen who move in to live in the same neighborhood. One of the gentlemen is Mr. Bingley, who is eligible and rich with and the other man is his friend who is conscious about his status, Mr. Darcy, and happens to be more eligible and more affluent. Bingley immediately likes the eldest daughter of Bennet by the name Jane when they move in; on the other hand, Darcy remains disdainful of the society they have moved in and in many occasions’ clashes with the second daughter of Bennet by the name Elizabeth (Hasan, 2012).

‘The Secret Diary’ by Lizzie Benet is about her life experiences as she makes videos of her thesis in graduate school. Moving from Pemberly to Netherfield, and back again, she navigates the dangerous relationships and social property waters characteristic of the twenty-first century, and this is both off and on the internet. What was initially meant to be a simple thesis idea ends up being a means for Lizzie to reflect and inform upon her life as well as the lives of her sister (Bennet, 2013)?

With the popularity and success that was not initially expected with regards to her videos, she suddenly finds her life and videos displayed prominently in the public eye over the internet. However, as revealing and personal as the videos are, her secret diary brings out her deepest anxieties as well as most of her private thoughts in the course of her year that turns out to be dramatic. [“Write my essay for me?” Get help here.]

‘The Secret Diary’ is a telling of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ via Twitter, online video blogs, and several other media outlets. It has been interestingly adapted from the story in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and made use of the social idea as a means of retelling the story. The ‘The Secret Diary’ comes out as a ‘Pride and Prejudice’ story that has been transplanted to suit the modern real world.

In her narration, Lizzie is presented as a young woman who is seeking to have a balance in her life, her friends, her work, her school, and her family. She is seen to make mistakes as she is expected to deal with the misconceptions she has about her life that includes Charlotte, Darcy, and Wickham as well as her sister Jane and Lydia and the rest of the characters in the story. The manner in which the story progresses as Lizzie discovers herself through her life experiences comes as the story in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ that has come to age and a self-discovery story. It appears as Bennet Diaries that has been expressed in the feelings and life of Lizzie in a modern and new way. [Need an essay writing service? Find help here.]

In one of the important scenes that are comparable in the two stories is when Lizzie recognizes her simplicity in the trauma experienced by Lydia and goes ahead to reaffirm their bonds. This takes place in Episode Two where she cried when Lydia quotes the comment she had made so as to haunt Lizzie. This episode was used by the writer to make Lizzie learn from its ramifications. It makes Lizzie learn that she should not refer to her sister as a slut without it coming out as a violation and she should not attack the sexuality of female characters in the scene without abetting the system which makes women likely to be attacked. [“Write my essay for me?” Get help here.]

It is evident that there is a thin line between the mental exposure of Lizzie on her Blog and the pornographic exposure that has been forced upon Lydia. Lizzie is presented as being socially and intellectually superior as compared to her sisters but taking into consideration they are living in a world of commodification and objectification, she is equally exploited, and this shows that all women remain vulnerable to harm.

Different from the case in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is where Elizabeth is seen to scapegoat Lydia and appears to be in a conservative comfort of her marriage. Finally, Lizzie starts to consider herself as being equal to Lydia as well as her defender and identifies their ineffable bonds. ‘The Secret Diary’ is a perfect adaption of Pride and Prejudice’ considering the way it has been presented in a modern perspective
